Big Road Trip Day 7

Today was probably the most risky day of the trip because I needed to catch a plane in Seattle or risk losing Alaska and Hawaii. I started the day in Columbia Falls, MT just outside of Glacier National Park.

While driving through the town of Libby, MT I saw a sign that caught my eye, “Billy Goat Ice Cream.” Really? So I stopped and ordered a scoop of the bear claw. Before eating any I felt compelled to ask if the ice cream was really made of goat’s milk or if that was just a slogan. The woman behind the counter loooked at me as if I was a complete moron and said it was just a slogan. Hey, if … Read More »

Big Road Trip Day 6

Today was a light day (only 438 miles) to drive from Bozeman, MT to Columbia Falls, MT and visit Glacier National Park. Driving through as much of Montana at night as I did last night was probably a mistake. From what I saw today Montana has a huge diversity of plains, forests, lakes, and mountains, and it made for a very fun drive.

I tried to stop for lunch in Helena, MT, however after several places informed me that they were closed for lunch and only served dinner I opted to just keep moving north, and then I found myself in Columbia Falls before I knew it lunchless.

Glacier National Park was absolutely amazing. From the giant snow covered mountains in … Read More »

Big Road Trip Day 5

The goal today was to start in Rapid City, SD, go down and see Mount Rushmore, the see Devil’s Tower and finally get to Bozeman, MT after driving through Yellowstone National Park. Because I was not able to see the Badlands National Park I tried to double back and then do everything else, but it quickly became evident that was not going to work. Instead I went to Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, but then took I-90 to Sheridan, WY and kept on going up into Montana and on to Bozeman. I have a reserve day which I’m seeing if I can work in to pick up Yellowstone on the way back east.

The Badlands National Park was … Read More »

Big Road Trip Pictures Days 1-3

Posted on May 26th, by Foodio54 in Big Road Trip. No Comments

I wanted to get some pictures up, but I have a gazillion and I just realized this laptop only has ms paint… which is ok, but not ideal. Also I want to do a little more with the food and restaurant images so these are just some interesting other things from the road up to Manitoba for now.

Me clearly not watching the road

Wisconsin

Lots of dairy farms

Beautiful countryside

Scary at night… I’m curious how long it will take for deer to evolve to the point that they don’t throw themselves in front of cars.

Minnesota

Famous for having lots of lakes

Going to the Angle

Checking in with customs at Jim’s Corner

Manitoba

Made it past the mounties!

In the wilderness, had a very don’t break down feeling.

Unpaved roads to the Angle

Where we’re going we won’t need roads…

The single worst “road” I’ve ever driven on, seriously I’m suprised that … Read More »

Big Road Trip Day 4

Today the goal was to get from Fargo, ND to Rapid City, SD, however I needed to dip down into Iowa and Nebraska.

The drive down from Fargo to Iowa was pretty easy and once I got to Sioux City, IA Foodio54 recommended Bev’s on the River. My first reaction when I walked in was, whoa, this is going to be expensive, however the entire menu was very affordable. The inside is very large and covered with stonework that would make one think that they are in for a big bill. It was also delicious. I had an island chicken sandwich that consisted of teriaki chicken with pineapple. Because it was a nice day I decided to eat outside and … Read More »

Big Road Trip Day 3

Today I needed to get from Duluth, MN to the Northwest Angle of Minnesota and then back down to Fargo_ND.

I started off going up to International Falls, MN and I ate an order of parmesan chicken for lunch at Giovanni’s, great pasta and cheese, but chicken and garlic bread were awesome.

The Northwest Angle is a section of Minnesota that is cut off from the rest of the United States, and so it was necessary to enter Canada to reach it. I’ve been to Canada a few times before and I’ve never had any trouble at the border, but apparently my story of being on a 50 state road trip is crazy enough that they wanted to check my car. … Read More »

Big Road Trip Day 2

I started off today intent on getting to see Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, and I was able to do both at once in Evanston (I’ll upload pictures from today and yesterday tomorrow).

I then headed north to Wisconsin, but before crossing the border, I asked Foodio54’s recommendation system for a place to eat and it sent me to Rosati’s Pizza. This was a carry out/delivery place, and I ordered a calzone with pepperoni. The calzone was ginormous and the sauce and cheese were excellent.

My next task was to visit Wilson’s Ice Cream Parlor where I was under the impression that they had created the first ice cream sundae in the late 1800’s. After ordering, what else but an … Read More »

Day 1 is now complete. I started in Cleveland, headed down to Columbus to see my parents, and then drove to Chicago.

Because the day started late I only ate one meal officially on the trip and it was great! You can read my review of Bynum’s Steak House in Indianapolis. Bynum’s was not very much out of the way, but hidden enough that it was very nice for the recommendation system to point me right to it.

I don’t think this trip would be possible without my Garmin GPS device, however, the normally reliable contraption led me off the highway to the downtown area of none other than Gary Indiana (formerly known as the Murder Capital of America) and ongoing … Read More »

Free KFC until May 19!

Posted on May 6th, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

It looks like KFC is now trying to entice people to come in and try their new Grilled Chicken. They’re actually going to give away a free 2 piece meal up through May 19th as long as you present a coupon. I had seen the signs advertising the new KFC grilled chicken and I’ve thought about stopping in and trying it, but for some reason i just never decided to pull the trigger on that. This will definitely send me to KFC to try this out.

This also gave me a reason to see if this new chicken was a publicity stunt or if the grilled version of KFC chicken was actually healthy for you. So i went to check it out and this stuff is pretty healthy. Just a quick look over the nutritional info shows that none of the … Read More »
