After being laid off, Jim Wilson, Rick VanVoorhis, and Greg Harvey from Ames, Iowa decided to open a pizza place.
After Jim Wilson was laid off from Siemens after 33 years, he talked two other newly unemployed co-workers into starting a Black Market Pizza in Ames, IA. Greg Harvey had been making pizzas for years and selling them locally out of his home, and when Rick VanVoorhis cashed in his 401k to finance the operation they became a “real” business.
The name Black Market Pizza came from when Greg Harvey sold pizzas out of his home to family and friends in the local neighborhood.
This is why we’re coming back folks. Three guys, each looking at a terrible situation, risk everything to start a small business. If that isn’t America I don’t know what is.
“Don’t panic. Don’t be afraid. Who knows what you can accomplish? Otherwise, you’re an old man saying ‘what if’,” said Harvey.
We wish Black Market Pizza the best of luck.
