Cliffs in Maui

Today I was not planning on having a car, but since I do have one I thought why not drive around the island a bit. However, first things first I took a walk along the beach to try to relax a bit from all of this travelling.

Google and Garmin both described the Kahekili Highway and Hana Highways as highways. I don’t think I would use the term “highway,” because these roads were the most treacherous I’ve ever driven on in my life (even going under the 25 mph speed limits).

The Kahekili Highway runs along the north eastern coast of Maui and has pull off areas that give just unbelievable views of the ocean battering against the cliffs. It starts off a two lane road that is a little narrow, but no big deal. Then it becomes one lane, that is one lane for both directions (maybe a lane and a quarter). On my right was a cliff that went up a few hundred feet and on my left was a cliff that went down a few hundred feet. Luckily every time I had an oncoming car there were little divots carved out and I was able to pull over so that we weren’t stuck. I’m not sure what would have happened if I had come across another car in an area without one of those little divots. Despite the freaky road the sights made it well worth the white knuckle drive.

After finally getting back to a normal road I asked for a lunch recommendation from Foodio54 and it sent me to the Big Wave Cafe in Kihei. I ordered the blackened ahi, which is a tuna fish sushi dish with diced tomatoes on top. My only complaint was that there wasn’t enough of it because it was very good. When this trip is over seafood in Ohio is never going to be the same after eating fresh seafood in Alaska and Hawaii.

After lunch I decided I would try to drive to Hana, HI and get some dinner before getting on the plane. I took the Hana Highway which didn’t have such an extreme one lane issue like before, however this time it had at least 30 one way bridges and was very narrow wand curved constantly to the point of making me dizzy. Again though, the cons of traveling on this treacherous road were minor compared to the scenery. The drive took me along cliffs going down to the ocean and through thick jungles. Unfortunately when I arrived in Hana I realized that I had almost no time to make it back to the airport, and so I wasn’t able to get anything to eat :(

I flew on Hawaiian Airlines from Maui to Honolulu and it was a short and pleasant flight. I got into my hotel at about 10pm and since I was without a car my options for eating were limited. I used Foodio54 to find me something close and I walked over to Byrum’s, which was a fast food place. I ordered two turkey sandwiches, which were ok, I was hungry enough to eat anything though. I was still a little hungry so I broke into my banana bread that I purchased from a roadside stand in Maui.
