Big Road Trip Day 20

See the Restaurant Road Trip of America planning and uploaded GPS coordinates of the trip in progress, or follow me on Twitter.

Great Salt Lake

Because of the Four Corners Monument being closed last night my first order of business was to double back to see that and then go north through Utah to my hotel in Rexburg, ID which will put me in a great position to see Yellowstone tomorrow (as you may recall I missed Yellowstone in the beginning of the trip and had to postpone it in order to get to Seattle on time for my flight to Alaska).

Four Corners was kind of interesting, however in retrospect because I will be seeing a lot of all four states included there wasn’t a need to come here to claim that I had been to all four states. Still in a trip of America as comprehensive as this has been it would have been silly to skip such a popular destination, and so from that perspective I’m happy I went. Additionally, I had heard that the monument is actually a few miles from the actual intersection of the four states, however, according to my Garmin that rumor is not correct. The marker seems to be right where it should be.

From Four Corners I traveled north through Utah which had some really spectacular scenes of stone structures carved out by the wind. I arrived in Salt Lake City in the evening and decided to get a recommendation. Foodio54 sent me to Wild Mushroom Pizza, which was a small local place. I ordered a large pepperoni and mushroom (I felt obligated because of their name) pizza. Really it was very good, and oddly for a pizza place they gave me a fortune cookie. Also the reason that I got a large is that they said it was cheaper than the medium, so perhaps they might want to look into their pricing, or maybe it was just on a promotion :)

After stuffing myself with pizza I wanted to see the Great Salt Lake. This was much more difficult than I thought, ever road I went down seemed to go close, but not close enough to walk the rest of the way or had private property blocking my way. I finally found a state park that provided a causeway out to Antelope Island. The causeway provided a really spectacular view of the lake and ended up taking me to a small beach on the island. I was expecting something more like the salty pools in Death Valley, but it didn’t seem significantly more salty than normal ocean water.
