Smoking Ban Issues Continue For Restaurants

Posted on December 4th, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

It is an issue that all of us are faced with every time we walk into a bar or restaurant. For such a long time it was common place to enter a restaurant and to be asked whether you would like to be in the smoking section or the smoke-free section. Now if you’re a smoker…the reality is that you may have the ability to step out on to a patio or you may just have to leave the restaurant entirely. Many restaurants around the country have opted to create patios that smokers can walk out to without having to leave their drink or meal entirely. But, in Los Angeles that is about to change. The mayor is about remove this convenience for smokers by making it illegal to smoke in restaurant or bar patios… which happens to be the very reason that … Read More »

New Profile Pages and Facebook Like Buttons

Posted on September 21st, by Foodio54 in Development, General. No Comments

New updates!

We’ve been very busy recently crunching numbers (billions of them) for some very cool upcoming features, however we thought that we would take a short break from that and clean up a few pages that were in dire need of some love.

Previously the logged in portion of the site did basically what we wanted, but lacked a focus and was a little messy. We revamped everything putting much more emphasis on the recommendations and promoted a few interesting statistics (unrelated to our number crunching) to the primary logged in page as well. If you don’t have an account you can sign up for free.

Additionally we just started updating our Foodio54 Facebook page and added Facebook Like buttons to all restaurant listings.

There is no “Prayer” in IHOP

Posted on September 16th, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

Apparently, the International House of Pancakes does not want you mixing up whether you wanted to order up a stack of hot cakes or whether you wanted a few “hallelujahs” and “Amens.”

IHOP has just filed is a lawsuit against IHOP.

That’s right. IHOP claims that a Missouri based church known as the International House of Prayer or IHOP is infringing on their brand by using their acronym.

Lawyers from the pancake food chain feel that they church, “selected and adopted the International House of Prayer name, knowing it would be abbreviated IHOP. IHOP-KC intended to misappropriate the fame and notoriety of the household name IHOP to help promote and make recognizable their religious organization.”

I can’t say that I disagree with them, but this is bound to make a few Christians upset and spells disaster for the International House of Chanukah.

McDonald’s bullied by the fat police

Posted on June 23rd, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

On Tuesday, the Center for Science in the Public Interest informed McDonald’s of its intent to sue to stop the fast food giant from providing toys in happy meals. The Center for Science in the Public (hereafter known as the “fat police”) say that the toys represent unfair and deceptive marketing.

“Multi-billion-dollar corporations make parents’ job nearly impossible by giving away toys and bombarding kids with slick advertising,” said Michael Jacobson, sheriff of the fat police.

It seems to be a ridiculous notion that parents are unable to make decisions for their children and have been completely overcome by slick advertising from McDonald’s. Even if this is true that McDonald’s forces the parents to go there they provide healthy alternatives to the standard happy meals that parents could buy. In that case the kids would have their toy that the fat police … Read More »

Hamilton restaurant removes silly urinals

Posted on June 2nd, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

For three years The Honest Lawyer in Hamilton, Ontario had silly ridiculous urinals in the men’s rest room shaped like open mouths. Then 8 months ago a women’s group somehow discovered the urinals and took offense to them, there is no explanation as to why the members of the women’s group were snooping around the men’s restroom.

However, once the cat was out of the bag, politicians and women’s right groups defended on the most important issue of the day, silly urinals, and eventually The Honest Lawyer restaurant gave in and removed them. Clearly there are no greater issues in which their energy could be spent.

“When we first put it in, it was just a joke, it was not gender-specific and it was supposed to be funny.” said operations manager Renee Roth.

“There are a lot of people who think it’s ridiculous … Read More »

No more Pizza Hut for troops in Afghanistan

Posted on March 25th, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

According to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall, all Orange Julius, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Dairy Queen locations that serve US soldiers (and presumably all allied forces) are being shut down to make room for 37,000 new soldiers and help logistically get other supplies like ammunition.

April Fools day is coming up, but this is no joke. To me it seems as though if our soldiers are 10,000 miles away from home fighting for us the least we could do is give them a few friendly comforts.

Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall writes“This is a warzone – not an amusement park.” And that’s true, but so what? If it’s possible to get an Orange Julius into a warzone, why not? I could more readily understand that argument if it wasn’t even possible to setup such facilities, but that’s not the case, it … Read More »

The odd couple. Weight Watchers and McDonalds

Posted on March 3rd, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

Well who saw this one coming?

McDonalds and Weight Watchers have partnered up. McDonalds will be using the Weight Watchers Logo to highlight some of the chains healthier options and promote foods that have been approved by the dieting chain in New Zealand.

Unbelievably Chicken nuggets and the Filet ‘o’ Fish have made the cut.

This is a deal that is obviously going to end up upsetting some people out there. It may be fair to say that Weight Watchers has sold out a little here by agreeing to endorse food on the McDonalds menu. Obesity is a growing problem all over the world and especially so in western cultures. There is no one person or group that can be easily blamed for the problem, but I imagine that this endorsement will not end up helping the problem.

Aside from the health concerns here … Read More »

Thomas H. Lee Partners Look To Aquire CKE Restaurants

Posted on February 26th, by Foodio54 in Restaurant News. No Comments

CKE Restaurants, parent company to Hardees and Carls Jr. have agreed to a $918 million buyout from THL.

THL made headlines a few years ago when they purchased Dunkin Donuts. CKE restaurants, which focus on the “premium” fast food burger, have seen their businesses decline in the recent years. Other fast food chains have been able to take advantage of the weaker economy and offered a slew of budget meals. McDonalds and Burger King have expanded their dollar menus, but CKE restaurants have refrained from discounting and have seen their same-store sales slide downward.

THL will look to turn the struggling chains around, but will have to wait until the aquisition is over. CKE will have the ability to look for more offers for the next 40 days. Its uncertain whether or not other private equity firms will look to purchase the … Read More »
