  • deleyla reviewThis review is biased in that I am persian and was raised by my persian mother who is by means one of the greatest cooks out there. Having said that, I still feel that out of the two food options here in Austin, Shandeez definitely ranks second.

I had the Gormeh Sabzi - my favorite dish of all time. Alborz has a great Gormeh Sabzi, very close to the awesomeness of the dish that my mother makes. It is with a heavy heart though that I must report that the Gormeh Sabzi that I had at Shandeez was not very good. Gormeh Sabzi should be a thick stew served with basmati rice. Their stew was very watery with a very small amount of beef. Their basmati rice was good, but overpowered by the taste of butter.

Their Mast-o-Khiar (cucumber, yogurt, dill) was good, however I was confused as to why they doused it all over the grape leaves appetizer. It would have been wonderful if they had put it in a side cup so that we could dip our grape leaves in it, but instead it was very very generously poured all over the grape leaves and as a result it overpowered the actual taste of the grape leaves.

The service was good, but that may have been because we were the only people in there.

I was a little turned off by the fact that they also did not have a lunch menu. They only have a dinner menu, and so going in during lunch time I had to pay for dinner sized portions that I really could not eat.

All in all, I will not be returning. If I don't feel like cooking myself but am in the mood for some decent and mostly authentic persian food, I will head over to Alborz instead.

  • Jonathan H.First time I have ever been here when they were on a wait! But well worth it and glad to see this place doing so well - best Persian in Austin by far.
