Mastication Monologues on May 29, 2014
The first bite I took was fantastic. The kaiser roll was thick and fresh, and the beef was succulent with slightly greasy undertones. As for the pickles, they were just the right amount of sour, and the onion slice provided a nice change of texture. Plus, it wasnt very overpowering in terms of taste which made me think that it was probably a Bermuda onion. Each slice of American cheese was perfectly melted to hold the juicy patties together to form one delicious hamburger.

Today I will be talking about a Chicago institution that was immortalized in a Saturday Night Live skit with John Belushi...

This restaurant is very over-rated. Was highly disappointed. It is in the basement of a smokefilled bar, and the burgers are comparable to any burger in any other bar. Probably worse. And the owners and service is rude! Rather get a burger at McDonalds than put up with rude people and average food.
by roncarlson1
Берите сразу дабл - котлеты хоть и вкусные, но тонкие, а булочка толстая. И да, чтобы найти это место, надо спуститься с Michigan по лестнице.
by Kathy J
They know their hamburgers here.

Decent burgers and fun place to visit. Order a double cheese with chips and leave the poor waitstaff alone!
by Chris F.
Didn't stay - after walking in we were stared at and not made to feel welcome. The cash only made our decision for us and we left! In a very stranger place too.....

1st time at the Billy Goat Tavern. I know it's an institution in Chicago so I want to give it a try. Maybe it was the time, but is was Ok for me. Nothing really stands out, but maybe that's the charm.

Underneath the Chicago Tribune Building, the original hangover cure serves greasy cheeseburgers and many beers. Bright lights and surly reporters. What's not to like?
by The Wall Street Journal
Put it on the top of your list !! great people great place great staff
by Eric W.
While they have several options listed, they sure do 'encourage' everyone to order the double cheezeborger. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed.
by Brian C.
The stories are true—this subterranean tavern is still the best spot to get a made-to-order “cheezborger” with a side of shtick.
by Time Out Chicago

The burgers at Billy Goat are expensive, thin, and gross. The only thing this place has going for it is ambience.
by Robert S.
A shot of Malort makes the place looks good ;-) Be prepared if you go to the bar...
by Quentin R.

It's a must for fans of SNL. Other than that, skip. Get the double or triple cheezeborger. Slices of burger are paper thin and over-cooked.

by Kyle C.
Burgers were blah. Nothing special about this joint! In n' out in California makes better burgers!

An underground gem in the heart of Chicago. Double double is the way to go. Be ready to order quickly, but don't be turned off by the staff's rough facade--they just really like the double double.
by Social N.

Instead of the usual double cheez, it is better a triple cheez with extra cheese.
by k4zuuu
The skinny burgers get a nice sear on the hot griddle, and you can top them with as many of the wonderful pickles as you want. You can't order fries, but the chips help bulk this out to a fine meal.
by Serious Eats
Me encanta. La cerveza muy rica y ahora a probar la comida
by Marco O.
Damn shame Billy Goat is know for some silky SNL skit, rather than for Chicago columnist Mike Royko who haunted it and wrote about it for decades

The ‘cheezborger’ gets incessant airplay to this day; but it has evolved to good craftbeers on offer, & its house drafts are a superb value for the money. And it will turn on the soccer game.
by Steve ‘Pudgy’ D.

by Lee G.
The billy goat dark beer is $3.50 a mug.. well worth it. Try it. Also, get a double if you want any meat. Thin patties and lots of bread. A triple is more balanced.

If you try to eat 5 triple cheeseburgers in an hour, don't buy them all at the same time. Order the next one as you finish the last or the fifth one will be ice cold when you bite into it.
