Mastication Monologues on May 29, 2014
The first bite I took was fantastic. The kaiser roll was thick and fresh, and the beef was succulent with slightly greasy undertones. As for the pickles, they were just the right amount of sour, and the onion slice provided a nice change of texture. Plus, it wasn’t very overpowering in terms of taste which made me think that it was probably a Bermuda onion. Each slice of American cheese was perfectly melted to hold the juicy patties together to form one delicious hamburger.

Today I will be talking about a Chicago institution that was immortalized in a Saturday Night Live skit with John Belushi...

Billy Goat Tavern is one of Chicago's most famous establishments. It has been around since the 1930s and now has several locations throughout the city. When first walking into the restaurant, you get that diner feel...

New development on the site of the building where the Billy Goat Tavern exists may displace the iconic restaurant. Get there while you still can!
Only $6.99 and it tastes way better than the burger from the diner downstairs at my work! Awwwww Chicago I love you~

Fria. Não vá . Atendimento ruim e cerveja quente.

Sit in the left side, beside the wall, theres a lot to read and you'll get a view of the whole place.

The burgers at Billy Goat are expensive, thin, and gross. The only thing this place has going for it is ambience.
by Robert S.
A shot of Malort makes the place looks good ;-) Be prepared if you go to the bar...
by Quentin R.
Get a double cheezborger and remember "chips no fries." Don't miss the pickle and onion bar to the right of the counter.
by Ben K.
It's a must for fans of SNL. Other than that, skip. Get the double or triple cheezeborger. Slices of burger are paper thin and over-cooked.
by Collin V.
What a delicious little dive. Cannot comment on the food, but the atmosphere is great.
by Kyle C.
Burgers were blah. Nothing special about this joint! In n' out in California makes better burgers!
by Nathalie B.
An underground gem in the heart of Chicago. Double double is the way to go. Be ready to order quickly, but don't be turned off by the staff's rough facade--they just really like the double double.
by Social N.
Get the double cheese! Double cheese is the best!
by Laura B.
Bad food, terrible service.

Double Cheese is the best and remember you need to wait at the counter for your food.
by Jack H.
A must when attending any Chicago sporting event.
Dig it, fans!
by Garrick B.
Instead of the usual double cheez, it is better a triple cheez with extra cheese.
The skinny burgers get a nice sear on the hot griddle, and you can top them with as many of the wonderful pickles as you want. You can't order fries, but the chips help bulk this out to a fine meal.

Me encanta. La cerveza muy rica y ahora a probar la comida

Damn shame Billy Goat is know for some silky SNL skit, rather than for Chicago columnist Mike Royko who haunted it and wrote about it for decades
Late night double Cheeseburgers!
by Natalie W.
Cheap drinks, good service... Kind of a staple! If you're down town, check it out!
by Caitlin F.
Loved it! Great prices and good food! And it's a ton of fun if you know the history!

Decide quickly. Go for double cheeseburger
by Hendrik R.
Coke, no Pepsi
by Julie B.
The double is delish, but if you wanna be a man get the ribeye!
by Raine F.
Las mejores hamburguesas. Doble cheese bacon rules!!
$6.00 rum & coat wtf
Subterranean 'cheezborger' joint made famous by a 1978 SNL skit, it's an only-in-Chicago place to eat. Request a souvenir paper hat. – Green Guide Editor

good/ridiculous comforting burger spot

If you want to know what a bar was like in the 1960 or 1970's this I your place actually pretty fun but bring cash no credit or checks.

Best late night burger spot on the Mile. Double or triple never a single
by Andrew H.
If you want a real dive experience & a fun place to eat you gotta try the legendary Billy Goat. You won't be sorry.
by Mandy C.
Come in for a great, affordable haircut.
Thicker and more addictive than the patties you're used to, plus all the personality you can swallow. No fries, only chips. No Pepsi, only Coke.
by BlackBook Magazine
Gotta get the double if you want a burger with substance. Classic Chicago joint that shouldn't be missed.
by Casey M.
The 312 Urban Wheat from Goose Island brewery will make your double cheez better and better!

Order a Pepsi, hamburger, and chips!
by Lina G.
The ‘cheezborger’ gets incessant airplay to this day; but it has evolved to good craftbeers on offer, & its house drafts are a superb value for the money. And it will turn on the soccer game.
by Steve ‘Pudgy’ D.
Best crab rangoons in town.
by Lee G.
The billy goat dark beer is $3.50 a mug.. well worth it. Try it. Also, get a double if you want any meat. Thin patties and lots of bread. A triple is more balanced.
by Mark H.
3 triples in one sitting... I dare you...

Double cheese is best!

We have many vendors in the Loop area! Help them out!

They will give you grief if they don't recognize you, but the ribeye steak sandwich is a nice break from double cheezborgerz
by Sean M.
Daytime bartenderJeff Magill is one of the best you'll find in the city. Pleasant, efficient, and always smiling. He's been there since the early 1980s.
If you try to eat 5 triple cheeseburgers in an hour, don't buy them all at the same time. Order the next one as you finish the last or the fifth one will be ice cold when you bite into it.
by brad d.
Get an Old Style at the Bar. The bartender is awesome.
by Josh W.
Vegetarians your out of luck unless you get the egg and cheese. I suggest toast instead of a bun.
by Joey L.
by Shaun Z.
If you're a vegggie go for the egg and cheese.
by Brad S.
Watch out for shoe shine scam operators lurking outside this place. Do not let them touch your shoes or you're screwed.
by Adam C.
If they run out if the double cheeseburger, just get the triple cheeseburger!
by Todor K.
For the love of god don't ask for fries.
by Matt D.
Regale the kids with tales of the classic SNL sketch so they'll know a "cheezborger" is what to order in the dim, storied landmark.

Make sure to Bushaib ask about Pulitzer-prize winning photographer Jon Konstantaras, who should be on the wall!

Try their Billy Goat beers too! You can't go wrong. Very tasty.

What a dump.
by Matt A.
Mediocre double cheeseburger. Don't care for having to put stuff on myself, wrap and bag it. Off the list.
by Myra R.
Get the Double Cheese!!!
by Patrick M.
The source for the idea of the SNL skit Olympia Cafe and the curse that haunts the Cubs to this day, stop in here to get away from the shopping on upper Michigan Ave and enjoy a real piece of Chicago
by Drunken History
If you love cheesebuegers like I do, the double cheezborger isn't enough. Make it a triple!
by ANDY W.
Try the Horny Goat...lol funny and tasty.
by Lauren K.
Double Cheezborger. No Fries Cips. No Pepsi Coke.
by Aaron W.
U better know what u want by the time it's ur turn to order. Get the double cheezborger! Not the greatest, but hey, it's the Billy Goat!
by Anthony V.
Fun to watch the tourists try to order anything other than a double cheese.
