The hype is real. Make sure you take advantage of the samples. Although there is most likely to be a line, it is worth the wait. A must-do for a Chicagoan.
by Kelli S.

IL sausage emporium.

The only difference I found between the duck fat fries and reg fries is that duck fat fries were dry and over cooked. I don't understand. Dogs were awesome, though.. no doubt.

"The next time you get a craving for an exotic hot dog, head to this meat mecca in Avondale." -Zagat

Went on Thursday at noon and only had a 5 minute wait. Get the foie gras duck sausage! The jalapeño one was great too. If eating in, no need to wait at the counter, they'll come around and find you.
by Broidy

Yum! Get the Dog with everything and try the specialty sausage. Worth the wait in line.

Quite possibly the most fun dining experience I've had in years. Fun atmosphere, service and the food is unbelievably tasty. The Chicago Hot Dog and the Fois Gras dog were both amazingly delicious!

Awesome hot dogs and sausages. Try a specialty one and either the char dog or Elvis. And, remember, cash only!!
by Suzanne B.
Reward yourself after your hour long wait with the foie gras duck sausage. The artery blockage is worth it.
by Joy C.
There's little doubt that Hot Doug's is the preeminent hot dog and "sausage superstore" in Chicago, perhaps even the country and world. [Eater 38 Member]

Order one of the unique dogs, or you will feel underwhelmed by the experience. I made the mistake of ordering a plain chili dog, which I could have gotten at Sonic without waiting for an hour.
by Hillary H.
The normal hot dog was fine but get the specialty dogs. Also, I think the duck fat fries were not as great as the tips suggest. Get an extra specialty dog instead of the fries!
by Sean Y.
Go for the pork specials.
by subtitles f.
Doug is an awesome guy and the Sweet Chinese Sausage rocked my world.
by Susan C.
Ask for the truffle aioli as a side to dip the duck fat fries in. Nirvana.

They should make their items order-able from my smart phone by adding them to the app "appay biz". That way, I can order ahead using "appay"!!!!!!

Chow time!
by Bennuworld
Tried the yak sausage special. The pork cracklings topping made this the bomb!
by Bennuworld
Trust me: You're not ready to order when you get to the door. You think you're ready, but then you see the 10 various specials of the day and you have to start thinking all over again.
by Jake S.
Hot Doug's might be the best sausage shop in America, so plan accordingly. Show up early, enjoy the wait, and look forward to chatting with Doug about your encased meat of choice.
by Serious Eats
Amazing dogs and a great space. Check out the timeline in the back, "Critical Links - A History of Encased Meats." Brilliant!

Just relax and let the sausage pick you. Amazing what these guys can do with encased meats. A Chi-Town must that is worth the wait!
by Michael F.
Can't go wrong with this place. As a New Yorker it's hard for me to admit it, but this is by far way better than Nathan's in Coney Island
by Joe L.
Char Grilled Lamb Sausage With Feta Cheese on a Bun! That's a gourmet meal! Wow!

The wait in the line is not bad with great weather... The foie gras hotdog is simply the best and the duck fried fries is just sensational!
by Mark M.

Order a foie gras and sauternes duck sausage with truffle aioli, foie gras mousse, and fleur de sel. The result is a meaty, creamy, rich blast of flavor that never disappoints. It's a cult classic.

With up to 18 choices offered on any given day, deciding can be daunting. Options include rabbit, boar, pheasant, duck and kangaroo -- as well as your basic char dog and polish. Add duck fat fries!

Love spicy? Go for the Atomic Bomb!! Nuff said..
by Reinhard B.
Go before you're hungry.

Prepare yourself: for a long line and AMAZING hot dogs.
by Megan W.
Doug has veggie dogs for vegetarians, bagel dogs for kids and specialities for the highbrow hot doggers. But his famous duck-fat fries are only for customers who come out on Fridays and Saturdays.

Foie gras dog. Try it at least once, so rich and decadent. Always get a corn dog on the side, at that price you can't beat it. If you go right as they open on a week day, no line!

If you're vegetarian, you can still mix and match the toppings from any of the other dogs. You're not just limited to the standard toppings.
by James L.
I eat here 4 or more days a week. The sausages are that good and there's always something new to try.
by John H.
We hit this place at noon on a Tuesday and zipped through. BTW, listen to the people at the counter. They know what's the best way to have your sausage.
by Michael S.
Without a doubt, the best hot dog spot in Chicago =) my faves are the Anna Kendrick (fire dog, nice & spicy) & the Elvis (best polish sausage EVER) I promise you won't regret waiting if there's a line
by Elaine L.
Don't miss the 40-sausage chili. Each mouthful is wonderfully different. Noah's Ark in a bowl!
by John H.
This place is the shit! I came in with $15 worth of gift certificates. My order came to 12.75. They rounded it to 10 and let me keep the last $5 certificate for my next visit.
