Beer Belly Deli Reviews
One evening spent at the Mt. Adams fish house led to tear filled eyes, and a lack of desire to ever have lobster again. It was suppose to a special evening out to celebrate my birthday with my family from out of town. What started off as a great evening (minus our cork being broken off in the bottle of wine ordered)...ended up being one of the worst dining and customer service experiences in my life. After our main courses was served; mine being a split lobster coated with a white wine sauce with scallops and shrimp. That was the end of any pleasant experience. After three or four good tasting bites, my mouth was filled with large crunchy hairball (hidden in white wine sauce), the size of a half dollar! It took great reserve to not scream out or purge the few bites that I had taken, as I didn't wish to ruin my family’s meal nor those that were sitting in close proximity. I discreetly removed it from my mouth, set on the edge of my plate and pointed out this horrifying hairball to the waiter, who quickly whisked my dish away without a word. After this action by the restaurant I was left for at least 5 minutes to sit and drink wine, water and lick my napkin (trying to get all the hair out of my mouth). Then finally being told the owner of the restaurant would be out to speak to me, which took an additional 10 minutes. The owner approached out table apologized, stating you can't control what is in a lobster and said of course my meal would be taken care of; would you care for coffee or dessert. I don't know if any of you have ever found a hair in your food, but it will usually leave you with no appetite (let alone a half dollar hair ball). The excuse that was given would be reasonable with a lobster that had not been split (the logic of not being able to control what is in the stomach of a lobster) but being familiar with culinary preparation it is logical that when splitting a lobster you inspect and clean out the lobster of any foreign items before pouring a white wine cream sauce. Needless to say the compensation of my meal (which I didn't eat), didn't seem appropriate when my family now knowing what had happen also stopped eating their meals. And the whole dining experience had been ruined. I approached the owner of the restaurant in the hallway to discuss further the issue of the bill, as I did not want to interrupt the other guests dining experience. He further told me that he could do no other compensation, even when I let him know it was my birthday and this ruined our dining experience. This was not acceptable and now with the overall unpleasantness of the experience, the fact my family visit was ruined and it was my birthday my eyes were beginning to fill with tears, where he stated it was the best he could do. Let me just say in comparison, I went to another Fish House at Newport (six months later) where they were simply late bring out an appetizer (which not even a complaint or a question was placed)and the waitress brought it out to say it would be compensated and apologized for the lateness. At the end of the meal while waiting for check, which we eventually asked for; we were reminded that our entire check had been compensated as a result of us having to wait for our appetizer. Although I think that it was extremely generous customer service, the Mt. Adams Fish house did not show any nature of good customer service. Instead it would have been appropriate to offer a gift certificate to come back and try the restaurant again, so as to prove this was not the norm but the expectation and they really care about their customers. Instead they left me with the desire to not only never step foot in their establishment but also share with all that will listen my experience and recommendation to also never step foot in the Mt. Adams Fish House. It is my recommendation to not dine at the Mt. Adams Fish House but select one of the other fine restaurants in the Mt. Adams area or other fine fish houses in the area.
