  • ChefMozEl Az is not a high-end eatery, but if you're looking for satiating food with a relatively high amount of grease, El Az is it. It is indeed addictive. One note, the Lansing location (on MLK and Oakland) tends to have better food. But the East Lansing rooftop is hard to pass up. Service in EL is notoriously bad, I think being flaky is a requirement for being hired there. That said, there are some FANTASTIC dishes: CV burritos or the burrito plate (ask for an extra side of CV sauce for dipping); cheese dip (dip your chips in cheese first, then a touch of salsa); enchiladas de jojoque, blue corn enchiladas, and the topopo salad (which is gigantic, and don't let the name fool you, it's really a glorified nacho). Also, the sangria is killer. Even though I know it's made from super cheap red wine, it's just delish.

  • ChefMozALWAYS GET: 1. Margarita, but don't get the ones on special unless you want to drink cheap, (they are NOT the same as the famously good ones.2. CHEESE DIP, yummmy! It goes fast, we always order 2 one for the kids and one for the adults. Kids love it.RECOMMEND: 1. Topopo Salad. If you are vegetarian, just get it minus the chicken. They will substitute on that. (They won't sub any deep-fried foods - chimis, or enchiladas - its ALWAYS been that way)2. Joqoques or Blue Corn Enchiladas. Both have cheese, but vegetarian and delicious...like AWESOME! The best cheesy saucy things ever. I recommend getting it spicy over mild (they give you a choice) because I think they are both spicy in their own way but the "spicy" green (CV) sauce tastes better.3. Bean Burrito with white cheese (substitute it over yellow cheese) They will let you do that, and it is a popular thing, especially with the vegetarians. I recommend a side of CV sauce to dip in.NOT A BIG FAN OF: Chicken or beef enchiladas, suizas (although some love them, a bad cook can really screw them up), or their quesadillas. (ALSO, the West side El Azteco is slightly different and I have grown to prefer going there over East Lansing.)In East Lansing, generally, the wait staff is a bunch of punks and freaks, but it adds to the fun. I have seen some pretty bad days. But I've lived around here for 15 years and visit the place almost once a week. I practically lived off it while a vegetarian in college, and yes, it is ADDICTIVE.

  • ChefMozThe topopo salad is extraordinary. The enchiladas jocoque are fantastic. The salsa and cheese dip are a great way to start off the meal. Really different from what people are used to at Don Pablos, Chi-Chis, Taco Bell BECAUSE this food is authentic.

  • ChefMoz El Az is easily, far and away, without peer in the state of Michigan. The cheese dip, the blue corn Enchiladas tthe Menudo soup. All Awesome.

  • ChefMozI don't live in Lansing anymore sadly, but whenever I'm in town I make sure to take a dozen Chile verde Burritos with me to freeze for later! Don't listen to the naysayers... El Az is simply addictive and absolutely delicious! Get the beef chimi w/ guac for an amazing meal. CV burritos are fantastic, start your meal with the cheese dip - worth every penny! I also love the blue corn enchiladas, but order them spicy!I will suggest avoiding the chicken dishes... I don't know why, but they just aren't very good. All in all, there's nothing flashy about the service or the plates, but damn, the food is fantastic!

  • ChefMozOver-priced food with poor service. The Lansing area has a significant population of good people of Mexican heritage. Peaceful, friendly neighbors. When I first moved here, I expected great Mexican food. There are a FEW good places, but El Az is not one of them.

  • ChefMozMost mediocre Mexican food I've ever had. We went because we say it was "voted Best Mexican Food" in EL. Give me a break. Nice Mex like decor, but the rock music was crappy and too loud. Our server, "Emily" was curt, short, impatient, and in general I felt that all her customers were an inconvenience... but hey, we all have off days so I can live with that.I attempted to order a Chimichanga with beans instead of meat - she rudely said no, it couldn't be done. I asked why, owner says we cant, I asked why, "No substitutions", but I am a Vegetarian I pleaded, "Can't do it." I tried to order a different burrito platter - same thing. I asked to see the manager and was told he can't do anything - it's the owner’s rule and he is insistent about it. The more I talked about it and asked questions, the more bothered the server got. I was ready to leave, when she suggested I could order everything off the "a la cart", which I ended up doing. Like I say the food was not that great, was difficult to order anything vegetarian except the a al carte bean burrito. I'll never be back. Todd G.

  • ChefMozEl Azteco has a great rooftop. However, the food is terrible and the rooftop hours are random. I recommend it for drinks but never for food.

  • ChefMozI was shocked that this restaraunt was voted Best Mexican Restaraunt. My wife and I had the chicken enchilladas. The chicken was almost non-existent, they were the skinniest enchilladas we had ever seen and the tortillias were stale. My son ordered the beef burritto which was packed with hamburger that was dry and flavourless. I've had better Mexican at Taco Bell.

  • ChefMozFrom start to finish, an enjoyable experience. Excellent margaritas, giant portions, great service. Make sure to get started with a plate of Nachos Supreme and one of their killer mixed drinks. Highly recommended.

  •  Sit on the roof in the summer, it's fun to watch the going ons. The cheese dip is amazing. Topopo salad is delicious, among many other dishes. You can't go wrong with whatever you get.

  •  Best Mexican restaurant in Lansing area! Blue corn enchiladas is definitely the best entree here. Enjoy it for less on Thursdays.

    55555 by Duygu K.

  •  This is not Mexican food. This is barely food. And the margaritas have never heard of tequila. Avoid.

  •  If you order an enchilada dish, make sure you ask for the sopapillia that comes with it. YOU HAVE TO ASK, THEY WILL NOT BRING IT IF YOU DON'T.

    33333 by Matthew B.

  •  It's all good, but the Full Topopo Salad? Incredible! Hot tip: put a napkin or two underneath the plate to save everything that falls off this overflowing concoction of flavor!

    55555 by Mike J.
