  • ChefMozA friend and I decided to check out this place after reading the favorable reviews here, and because my co-workers ate there recently and seemed unimpressed. I had to decide for myself who was right.We arrived around 5 p.m., before the crowds, thankfully, or we might never have gotten home. If there's only one chef in the kitchen, he really ought to consider getting some help. The wait between ordering and receiving our appetizer, then the wait between the salad and the main course, then another long wait after ordering espresso at the end of the meal, made this simple meal last over 90 minutes. We did not dawdle; that was time spent waiting on the food.While the servers were very pleasant and helpful, they weren't especially attentive, probably because they were too short-handed. The one event that bothered me in the extreme was when I realized I'd dropped my napkin, and it was resting atop my shoes under the table. The server reached under the table and gave the napkin back to me!! I was stunned speechless. After he left I flagged down a busboy and asked for a clean napkin. Now, for the food itself. Our appetizer of bruschetta was nicely done. The meals come with soup or salad. We both chose salad. It was nothing to write home about - a plate of mixed greens and a few croutons that had a taste of overused oil. We probably should have gone with the soup - minnestrone. After noticing they had quite a few veal dishes, I asked the waiter if that was their specialty, and he confirmed it. I ordered veal marsala. If I'm going to suffer a guilty conscience for eating baby cows, I should at least get something tender. The veal was very chewy, not at all what it should be. However, the flavor of the dish in whole was really quite good. My friend ordered one of the specials, osso bucco. Of course, I had to sample it! This was really good. The meat was nicely tenderized and flavorful. The red sauce on the accompanying pasta was great. I'm not a big fan of red sauces but this one I really liked. For dessert we ordered tiramisu. Pretty good, but a bit heavy on the coffee. Our entrees were about $20 apiece. There are lots of other dishes less expensive, most in the $15 range. I feel that the chef has some real talent but needs to remember the details (like not overcooking the veal and oversoaking the sponge cake in the dessert). The servers need to pay attention as well, and they really really need to get more help, because the service is just too slow. I'd probably go back, but only on an off night or at off hours, or maybe take-out is the best way to go.

  • ChefMozOvidio's is the best Italian restaurant in Fresno if one is seeking the closest thing to homemade yet still desiring to go out for dinner. Ovidios has the most extensive pasta menu in Fresno, and does every dish well. Homemade Italian food should have rich sauces, plenty of spices, hearty pastas of every variety and just enough secrets in the sauce to pique the imagination. Ovidio's is all of these. The pastas are always fresh and taste like something the owner personally prepared. If one is looking for something not on the menu, just ask. The best dish is one not even listed - penne pasta with a spicy meat sauce and vegetable mix. Molto bene! Don't expect gourmet here, expect real homemade. Service is always nice and friendly although sometimes pushed on a busy night. Show some patience as eating at Ovidios is like coming home again.
