Madras Palace Reviews
The new management has made a world of difference. The place was just OK before, but now I love it. The sushi is very good and there's greater variety. They still serve a good assortment of non-sushi items as well (the tempura is excellent!). The staff is also very attentive and friendly. The prices are slightly higher than under the old management, but the improved quality is definitely worth the increased cost.
I have been in love with Sushi Chalet (I think it got its bizarre name partially from the previous store name it inherited in it's spot in Muddy Branch shopping center--please, anyone who knows please tell me! It's not too hard to find in the farthest corner of the shopping center. Staff is courteous, attentive. Restaurant is open, casual, clean. Go at the beginning of the dinner and lunch hours. Be a smart buffet eater like the rest of the flock and keep an eye open on what's being put out because the more experienced will wolf down all the fresh sushi put out. I'm glad they did away from the Mongolian BBQ. It was just too much damn food! I was happy to see all the tempura which is VERY expensive usually and if you go at the beginning of lunch and moderate yourself and keep an eye on the buffet table you can really do some sushi/tempura damage. Make sure you stock up on the wasabi and the pickled ginger and the dipping sauce. The atmosphere is casual so you don't have to dress up fancy and freak out when you drop your sushi on the table. Don't go if you're a SNOB and expect great bending over backwards to please the individual and great works of art from the sushi chefs. If you see a piece of sushi has been sitting a while, then don't pick it up! More, fresher will come soon, move on! This is for sushi and tempura lovers of the non snob variety. Where else can you get such decent tasty sushi (and the cream cheese in one of the sushi creations is GOOD--experiment--TRY! The price is fantastic! I dare you to get your sushi fix elsewhere cheaper.
Yes...I too noticed that the place is under new ownership. As a result, things are great. No Mongolian Grill, but the Sushi is of higher quality and the Sushi chef knows his stuff.
I would just like to note that this is a completely new ownership as of early 2006 and all staff are new. Also, they've taken away the Mongolian Grill, but the food is much better and fresher, IMO.
Sushi Chalet is a great place for a quick lunch of sushi without having to spend too much money and time. The sushi was good and satisfying. If you want the “true” sushi experience then go to a full service sushi bar. This place is great for its convenience and variety. I will definitely eat at Chalet again. Too much rice... I don't understand that comment. It is sushi... right?
No, this is not the fanciest or best sushi restaurant that I've ever been to. However, you can have a good meal for a fair price here. Much better selection than most sushi buffets I've been to. As for the above criticism that there is "too much rice" - well, this is both untrue and absurd. The fish pieces are well-proportioned to the rice. Also, "sushi" happens to BE the rice so complaining that a sushi buffet has too much rice is like complaining that the beach has too much sand. Some people are just too picky (not to mention uninformed). This place is always worth a repeat visit. But hey, don't take my word for it, try Sushi Chalet for yourself
They should rename this a "rice buffet". What they serve has nothing to do with sushi. It is large balls of rice with tiny slivers of second rate fish on it.
I can sum the food up in one word: "ugh." The sushi is not terribly fresh and there are lots of unsavory rolls laden with cream cheese (!) and uncooked asparagus (or whatever might be on sale at the Weis market nearby). Some of the hot items are better, but still not worth the trip. Sushi buffets often offer pale imitations of the fine sushi we can get in the DC area, but Sushi Chalet offers some of the worst. I didn't rate the service since this is a buffet.
Offers a "touch" of the true sushi experience by offering all you can eat sushi. The quality is good, however they go heavy on the rice (to fill you up). Lunch selection is not as complete as the dinner selection as they leave out the more pricey selections (unagi, ebi, etc.). They do also feature a mongolian grill where you can select a "meat" (chicken, shrimp, or beef) and have it stir fried with vegetables or other seasonings.
