  • jerseyeats reviewCan't beat the breakfast, although the recent menu change no longer make it the bargain it once was. Just stay off the sweet stuff. Seems the staff has been instructed to be nicer to the non-Hispanic patrons as service has improved. On Fridays, try the fish -- it's good.

  • jerseyeats reviewLa Isla is not easy to find and, when you cross the threshhold, you may wonder if you're in the right place. It's basically a luncehonnete, with a long counter lined with swivel stools on one side and, across a narrow aisle, a string of about ten small tables. But the scent of garlic is in the air, along with the sound of Cuban music. There is a refigerator case of flan to your left. And the waiters are all wearing black tee shirts with `Havana` in big white letters across the front. Stick around and, if the wait for a table is too long, take a pace at the counter. The food is as authentic as anything you could order in Havana, but with the sculptural presentation of restaraunts of-the-moment across the Hudson. The empanadas are crisp, not at all greasy and chock full of savory chicken or ground beef. They had run out of roast sucking pig the Saturday night we were there (even though it was only 6 p.m.) but the pork tenderloin our waiter suggested as a substitute was moist and delicious. So was the grouper in pecan crust. And you won't find better flan outside of Miami or Cuba. Warning: the storefront next door is empty. Get to La Isla before they decide to break through the wall and lose the ambience of a coffee shop in old Havana.
