Russia House Restaurant Reviews

  • This was my first meal here. I was impressed with the decor and the table settings. There were four "combinations" on the first page for "dinners for two" consisting of appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert, and beverage. However, if you didn't want one of those pre-selected combos, there were several pages of appetizers, soups, salads and entrees from which to choose. My dinner companion had the stuffed cabbage rolls and enjoyed them. I had the chicken breast in apricot sauce and loved it. The Russian house salad was small, but elegantly arranged in the bowl. My entree was also arranged or placed well on the plate. I'm not sure what you call it, but the French probably have a name for it. :-)The service could have been a bit more attentive, given that we were the only customers there around 8:00pm, but it seemed like the waitress/hostess was doing double-duty in the kitchen too.Given the good food and the atmosphere I'm surprised this place doesn't do more dinner business.I thought the decor was a bit European, but my dinner companion said it reminded her of New England. Shows how much I know. Anyway, there's a nice display of those dolls that fit inside each other. The background music seemed elegant and continental. The lighting was elegant, the napkins were real cloth, and the crystal drinking glasses were spotless. There were some knick-knacks on the walls, but I didn't look close enough to see what they were. Our waitress must have been the owner who's a retired ballet artist. If you want to impress someone with a unique upscale restaurant in Indy, this is it. This is the only Russian place listed in the database, and the only Russian restaurant I'm aware of, unless you want to count the two lunch tables at Slaviansky Bazaar in Carmel. If you go with the full courses of appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, desserts, and beverages, it can get pricey. But with just two entrees and a salad, our bill was only $30.This restaurant is apparently a well-kept secret. If you want to impress people with your knowledge of the local restaurant scene, go here a couple times to find out what you like, then return with your friends, co-workers, or boss. This place really deserves to be more popular. Talk it up.
