Blogger Reviews of Hollyhock Hill

I can see why Hollyhock Hill has been around for a while now. Straight-up home style cooking served generously with accompaniments is always a big hit. I mean, for all that food I just mentioned, that only cost us 18.95 per person. That’s a lot of food, and that's a lot of visits I foresee in the future.

  • cozmokram reviewHollyhock Hill is located in a small house on College Avenue. Upon walking though the door, my first impression was of a nursing home. The decoration was old and `country home`, but that fits the restaurant's personality. The restaurant has a rather large dining area located in different rooms throughout the first floor. The menu is very simple and offers a choice of fried chicken, steak, fish and shrimp. Everything is served family style, so you only choose the entrée and the sides are shared. See the menu at www.hollyhockhill.com. They also have a selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle. We both ordered the fried chicken. The full meal is four courses: soup, salad, entrée and dessert. The soup consisted of chicken, rice and various vegetables in a tomato base broth. It was very good but served a bit hot and I had to add ice. The salad came with a relish tray (carrots, turnips, celery), pickled beets and cottage cheese. The salad is mostly lettuce and has the house `Sweet-Sour` dressing. I would have preferred a salad dressing choice, but the house dressing wasn't bad. The chicken was served with dinner rolls, corn, green beans, whipped potatoes and gravy. Everything was excellent! The chicken had a light breading and was not greasy. For my wife and I, there were two breasts, two thighs, two wings and one leg. We took a breast and two wings home. The corn was very sweet and the green beans had a nice flavor from the bacon. The gravy was a bit bland but good nonetheless. We were stuffed at this point and were glad to see that dessert was one scoop of ice cream and was presented with a tray of toppings: chocolate, butterscotch and crème de menthe sauces. Our server was excellent and all of the wait staff was very friendly. The four course meal was a great value at only $16 per person. Since we only had the fried chicken, and that is what the restaurant is known for, I cannot vouch for other menu items. Based on my experience, I would recommend Hollyhock Hill to anyone.

  • amberleewriter reviewHollyhock Hill is another of the independently owned restaurants of Indianapolis. If you are looking for local flavor and fantastic food this should be your first stop.Hollyhock is often attended by large groups and families. They serve their food `family style` in large bowls. Corn, beans, beets, mashed potatoes, and the famous fried chicken are just a few of the items on the menu. It's `grandma's sunday dinner` but you don't have to do the dishes! Heck, grandma will often suggest going here instead of cracking out the iron skillet herself.I kid you not, you'll be missing out if you don't eat at this place at least once in your lifetime. You'll definately need directions though. Hollyhock Hill is in a house in a residential area of Indianapolis. You'll be sure you're in the wrong area, but don't be alarmed. That white house on the top of that hill really IS where you're headed. And you'll never want to leave.

  • max5d reviewhollyhock hill has OK food. it is aimed at larger families, especially the after-church crowds. it doesn't cater to those with a variety of tastes and if you don't like fish or fried chicken, then you should probably eat a snack before coming. the rolls and corn are wonderful. unless someone else was paying, i wouldn't eat there.
