  • topzephyr reviewWe chose this restaurant for our Valentine's Day dinner based upon local recommendations. As others have noted the hostess was cold and surly. She managed to give you the impression that she was annoyed at having to deal with you.

    We had looked at their menu on line and were surprised when the menu we were given was a "Special Holiday" one which did not contain several items we were interested in.

    We selected a shrimp dish for an appetizer. The shrimp were very large but they were slightly undercooked and the special sauce with which they were served was inferior to a standard cocktail sauce.

    The bread presented was one small loaf and the salad was simply a small shallow dish of chopped lettuce with no additional ingredients or garnishes.

    For our entrees my wife choose a Fillet Mignon and I picked a veal dish. The steak, ordered medium to medium-well, was served well done. When we were able to get grumpy's attention we told here of this. Her response was "So what is it you want me to do about it!!" After recovering from her surly and insolent response we told her to replace it. I don't think the replacement stake was a fillet as it was a bit larger, irregular shaped, and had been butterflied. It also had that powdery texture of having been tenderized. But the flavor was not bad and it was not overcooked the second time. When she brought it she had the audacity to lecture my wife on how to order steak and indicated that the first offering, which did not have even a trace of pink in it, was what she (incorrectly)considers to be medium.

    My veal was pretty good but not at all exceptional.

    The quality of the food and service here are poor at any price and certainly a poor value.

The ever changing verbal menu consists of gourmet style continental cuisine and is prepared to order from fresh seasonal ingredients. Your patience will be rewarded with one of the finest meals you'll find anywhere. Food selections are unique and inventive, often original creations. Among the top notch dishes are Escargot Pot de Crème;Twin Beef Tournedos with Port Wine, Stilton Cheese and Green Peppercorn Sauce;Veal with Blackberry Sauce;Rack of Lamb with Sauce Paloise (the best rack of lamb I have had anywhere!), and so much more. MacDuff's also offers a fine and extensive selection of wines that are reasonably priced. MacDuff's has the largest selection of single malt scotches in Western New York along with an excellent variety of cognacs and imported beers.

  • ChefMozMy husband and I were in Jamestown and couldn't find an available table at any of the 3 restaurants in town (apparently you need reservations in Jamestown if you want to dine somewhere other than McDonald's), so a local couple suggested MacDuff's (we were warned that it was a bit pricey). We were greeted warmly by the owner, who happened to be our host for the evening. She and her husband were charming. The wine list was pretty extensive, but they unfortunately didn't have our first two selections, so she recommended a nice wine that was good. Our host verbalized the menu to us (but it's also posted outside the entrance so you can look before deciding to go in), and we decided on the filet minon and salmon dishes.While my husband and I enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and wine, we were a little disappointed with the taste of the food. The filet minion had a strange taste (over marinated?) and the salmon was a bit "fishy." We will definitely return if we are in town but we hope the food will be a little tastier; otherwise, we'll have a few drinks at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere.

  • ChefMozBeing Jamestown residents, we're a little put off by the slogan. Sadly, we're apparently the sort of ignorant savages that aren't welcome in such a place. We found the decor pretentious, the food far overpriced, and the hostess/server/owner amazingly rude.

  • ChefMozI've paraphrased the late, great Leon Adams who ate at MacDuff's and praised the experience. MacDuff's advertises itself as "Everything you never expected in a Jamestown restaurant". This is the truth. The food is prepared and presented with care and pride. The chef/owners watch over every detail. After our first meal at MacDuff's, we didn't return for many months after, yet Donna Templin, owner and server, remembered what our favored drinks were. Gary Templin works magic in the kitchen with dishes of variety and skilled preparation. It's been 9 years now since we first came to MacDuff's and there is always something new. They recently offered Rabbit in dijon Mustard and white wine sauce with homemade noodles. The dish was flavorful, yet no one flavor overpowered the other. Having said that, I must enphasize that aspect of the food. The flavors of each dish meld like magic yet you can discern each one seperately. Among the dishes to choose. Always have the soup...you will not regret it. Appetizers are many, but I recommend the Lobster in Pesto Mayonnise, Crawfish Etouffe, and the most exquisite escargot dish I hve ever eaten...Escargot Pot de Creme.Every entree is good and there is always a choice of fowl, fish, and meat. I have never had a better Rack Of Lamb than the one Gary prepares served with Sauce Paloise. all is prepared to order so it's a must that you bring your favorite people to spend time with...quality takes time. We rate every restuarant by the standards we find at MacDuff's.
