So it's been a while... but I'm back, using my fiancés computer for now... I haven't been cooking much lately... Work was a little crazy for a while and I had a business trip to Chicago... So when I cooked, I cooked a lot... So we've been eating a lot of leftovers and now Thanksgiving leftovers...

Max's Allegheny Tavern on the Northside is my favorite place to go for great food & a great experience. There is an amazing selection of domestic and imported beers, which is a plus for me. The building is historic and authentic, and it has been well-preserved. If you prefer a `rock music` atmosphere there's the Rathskeller (downstairs) which functions more like a bar-nightclub. On the main floor are the beautiful wood and polished brass bar and the many adjoining dining rooms. Each room has 8 to 10 tables, which gives you an uncrowded, intimate atmosphere. The menu features German-style cuisine such as their specialty Wiener Schnitzel (veal cutlet), Jaeger Schnitzel (smoked pork chop), Sauerbraten (roast beef with sweet/sour gravy), and Leberkaese (German meatloaf) and many other offerings. For private parties and gatherings (by appointment only) there is an absolutely beautiful upstairs private party area that has recently been redecorated and refurbished with a 19th-century elegant flair. My family of close to 50 people just had a private party at Max's upstairs party room and I cannot say enough good things about this establishment. It was an unforgettable experience.

What an amazing meal and great service! I had the Bavarian pretzels to start and then the Weiner Schnitzel with potato pancakes and homemade applesauce. The Pilsner on tap was PERFECT with the meal!!!

The best potato pancakes Pittsburgh. German food that costs $10 or so a meal. They have local beers, and a cheap happy hour. Have a slice of bread with apple butter before your meal.

I loved the waitstaff, the environment, & even the appetizer (sausage & cheese w/ honey mustard). The disappoint was with the spatzle. Wow... It's bad. The German potato salad was only okay. B+
by Scott W.
Sausage and cheese appetizer is amazing. It comes with honey mustard that is to die for. The apple butter is incredible. The big disappointment was the entree. Bland and the worst spatzle I've had.

The calamari is fabulous.
