  • grkaiser51 reviewMy wife and I went to the Can Can restaurant on Cary St in Richmond last night for dinner and to celebrate Valentine's Day with great expectations for a good time and a good meal. As it turned out however, my meal was the most disgusting meal I have ever had, not only in here in Richmond, but anywhere in the US! With our busy lifestyles my wife and I dine out 1-2 times a week and I have never experienced anything quite like this in, "the finest French restaurant," in Richmond, VA!

Let me start by saying that the ‘Grilled Hanger Steak with potatoes gratinee and Bordelaise sauce’ entry was the most horrible tasting steak I have EVER tasted! It tasted EXACTLY like Venison (deer meat).  You would think that the waiter would have explained that the, "hanger steak," is not a traditional steak at all, but something quite different. It is actually called steak but it is the ‘diaphragm of the cow’ for God's sake! Had I known this I would have ordered something else! When I told the server it was pretty bad he kindly offered to replace it with a Rib Eye steak. I said OK, even though I did not remember seeing a Rib Eye steak entry on the menu; that’s great... so, I got the Rib Eye in 15 minutes or so with a huge pile of ‘French’ fries... Are you kidding me - in this, “upscale French restaurant”?! French fries? A little embarrassing, not to mention unexpected. I could have gone to McDonald’s and saved on the $24 entry...

Well, worse yet, when I got the bill, ‘both’ stakes were charged!!! The server never mentioned ‘an extra charge for the 2nd steak when he offered so nicely to replace it. But his advise was, “that if we wanted a good steak we should not have come to a, "brasserie"... Oh, excuse me, but YOU offered it... and just FYI, according to Wikipedia, a ‘brasserie’ is a, "type of French restaurant with a relaxed, upscale setting, which serves single dishes and other meals. A brasserie can be expected to have professional service, printed menus, and, traditionally, white linen." Just for the record - no white linen in this one - the tables were covered with paper...

...after receiving the bill we immediately asked the waiter to get the restaurant Manager (unfortunately, I don't remember her name) … but she was not in the least hospitable about this, but rather created a scene ‘twice’; once at our table, and again at the cash register in the middle of the restaurant floor. It was an undesirable struggle to eventually reduce our bill by the first entry (as ANY normal restaurant would have done w/o the struggle!) But she said that, “if we do not pay for the steak we returned, I will just have to pay for it!? Seriously!?!? After her ensuing rant, as I said, she eventually told us she wouldn't charge our AmEx card for the first entry... Well, she lied! I just checked my account on line today, Feb15th, at 10am, and she charged us for both stakes!!!
Lastly, and in regret further, I should have realized this place had no class... we were crammed in a small seating arrangement, literally on top of each other, in this, "upscale brasserie," In fact we heard the entire conversations of the 5 couples that came and went during the course of our miserable meal. There was no intimacy on this fine Valentine's evening there.

We dressed up to take each other out, arrived, sat for dinner, and had totally honorable intentions! These people also had the gaul to insinuate that we were cheating them somehow, because THEY served up a very bad meal?! That was the furthest thing from our minds. We went there with honorable intentions. My wife is a physician, and I a Project Manager, and we are not bad people, but we are smart, and we both refuse to be treated like this. We have never returned a meal in a restaurant before, but this dinner was revolting, and this experience last night was the most undesirable, EVER!

PLEASE, save yourself the aggravation; wave as you drive by it on Cary St! We will never go back there.
