Fantastic Ethiopian cuisine with an outdoor patio. Travel guide - www.bikabout.com/washington-dc

Great for a group meal. Try a larger platter and share. Very friendly staff with great recommendations.
by Hannah J
just okay - we got the meat/veggie platter and it wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped for.

Doro wot to die for
by Elizabeth M.
Vegetarian platter with 16 items serves 3-4 easily. I actively crave injera so this is heaven. Don't be a noob and eat with a knife & fork. Eat with your hands!

Very authentic Ethiopian food!!
by Diego
reasonably priced delicious Ethiopian food in D.C. friendly staff & nice location on U-Street.

Get the lamb tibs!!

Great Ethiopian restaurant, everything is good! Gets busy, make a reservation
by Sofia U.
Try the sambusa and the wots
by Nitin A.
Touristy Ethiopian option in an area w/ tons of smaller, better places. Injera is usually dry & flavorless & the food is average at best. But if you're new to Ethiopian, you won't know the difference.

The Dukem special tibs are the way to go.
by Quinn Rask
The doro wat, a stew of chicken drumsticks and hardboiled eggs, is rich, spicy, and lipsmackingly good.

Food was cold and tasteless, and slow service
by Eliza W.
Best Ethiopian food I've had in DC and we've tried almost all of them. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
by Shane Tews
They'll only let you use one card per table, so if you're here with a group bear that in mind and bring cash.
by Xavier A.
Food was great. Service was prompt.

Sambusa and the music and drinks
by Derek M.
The best Ethiopian food. Don't overthink what to order, just go with the combo platters for however many people are in your party. Look ma, eating with hands!

Great fun with the fingers!

Wednesday night @ 7:30 music and dance.
by Becky B.
Poor service, but the food was worth it! If you are with 2-3 people, split the veggie platter to save some money and get more variety.
by Krista O.
Gluten free peeps- This restaurant imports injera from Ethiopia to sell and it is GF. For 7$ they will sell you a pack and use it in your meal (4-enough for the table!) it's better than the standard.
by Mariana B.
Ethiopian is one of those foods you have to try once, and Dukem is a good place to start. The lamb tibs are killer and the veggie plate is tasty, too. Service is meh, but food makes up for it.
by Liz T.
Very great atmosphere. I thought all the food was too spicy though. When I was able to get past that, it tasted great and came with good service.
by Josh L.
Beware of the $10 side salad. Authentic Ethiopian food.

Beef is good for some, but I crave flavorful vegetarian combos -- and they MASTER it here. Lunch is great time to visit!

The lamb tibs are amazing. Must order!
by Craig S.
Don't bother trying to use the $10 check-in coupon, this place won't honor it :P. Also has pretty shoddy service. I know it's top-rated in DC, but there are other good places in DC with better service
by Faith P.
Do brunch here when they host a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. A unique experience, indeed.
by FiOS 50
The veggie delux platter is easily enough for 3 people. Super good food!
by Nikki M.
On Wednesdays evenings they have live traditional music and dancing!
by Marie Claire A.
It might not seem like all that much from the outside, but Dukem is authentic Ethiopian in the heart of a city that takes its Ethiopian food very seriously. [Eater 38 Member]

Bar dominated restaurant, come here any of day of the week, at night, you wil be surrounded by people, live music, beer selection, culture, and atmosphere feeling like you just landed in east africa
by NightScene
If you can handle it, try the Gored Gored raw. It's a LOT of food though. Be warned.
by Chuq Y.
The bar is made from old bottles. Pretty cool.
by Chuq Y.
Try the asa dullet, amazing fish dish.
by Casey D.
The service is the worst. Not worth the hype. Go down the street to etete.
by Megan
The vegetarian platter here is amazing. Some of the best Ethiopian food in DC.
by Abby
If it's your first time with Ethiopian, go for a combination platter. Stay away from the kitfo (raw beef)... unless you know you can handle it.
by Daniel F.
best ethiopian food in dc, hands down. you won't be disappointed.
by Walter S.
Make reservations or be prepared to wait.
by Catherine N.
The vegetarian here is awesome. Most Ethiopians don't eat meat or dairy for 55 days during lent so the veggies and bread are all vegan friendly. Go big and ask for the 16 item fasting special.
by Casey D.
Try some amazing Ethiopian food. Not exactly for vegetarians.
by Larry C.
Try the tea.
